Happy Birthday Marilyn Monroe (June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962) “If my life could be lived again I would make every decision - except about being an actress - differently. But the result would probably be the same, so it has all been worth it.” - Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson, June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962) celebrating her 36th (and final) birthday on the set of Something’s Got To Give on 1 June 1962.
Evelyn Moriarty, Monroe’s stand-in, bought a $7 sheet cake and a studio illustrator drew a cartoon of a nude Monroe holding a towel (a reference to a scene in the movie) which read “Happy Birthday Suit”. The cast and
crew all signed it and attempted to celebrate when Marilyn arrived, but director Cukor insisted they wait until 6 pm because, he “wanted to get a full day’s work out of this woman.” Monroe had missed numerous days of filming due to a series of illnesses, including bronchitis and a persistent sinus infection.
After posing happily with Cukor (feeding him birthday cake), the party disbanded and Monroe celebrated with co-stars Wally Cox and Dean Martin. She then attended a Muscular Dystrophy charity event at Dodger Stadium (where the Angels played the Yankees), accompanied by Cox, Martin and Dean Martin’s son.
Monroe was fired from Something’s Got to Give 6 days later. 20th Century Fox publicly blamed Monroe’s drug addiction and alleged lack of
professionalism for her firing, even claiming that she was
mentally ill. Dean Martin refused to continue on the project with a replacement for Monroe, and the film was abandoned.
Sometimes I think it would be easier to avoid old age, to die young, but then you’d never complete your life, would you? You’d never wholly know yourself.
Happy birthday Marilyn Monroe!

“Everybody knows about her insecurities, but not everybody knows what fun she was, that she never complained about the ordinary things of life, that she never had a bad word to say about anyone, and that she had a wonderful spontaneous sense of humor.” - Sam Shaw.
